ENMU's Seema takes 800 at LSC meet

CANYON, Texas — Junior Malethabo Seema highlighted Eastern New Mexico University performances in the Lone Star Conference track meet over the weekend, capturing first place in the women’s 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 19.02 seconds on Saturday.

The three-day event featured 12 schools and was hosted by West Texas A&M, which swept both team titles with 212 points for the men and 290 for the women. Angelo State finished second and Texas A&M-Commerce third in both divisions, while ENMU placed fifth on the women’s side with 46 team points.

Portales sophomore Jessica Campbell earned third place for the Greyhounds in the women’s heptathlon, breaking her own school record with 4,840 points, and she also placed fifth in javelin competition with a throw of 130 feet, 6 inches.

In the heptathlon, Campbell was first in javelin (118 feet, 7 inches); third in high jump (5-3), the 200 (25.79 seconds) and the 800 (2:26.57), sixth in long jump (16-11 1/4) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (15.56).

Senior Mercy Rotich led multi-Hounds scoring finishes in two distance events, placing fourth in both the women’s 5,000 in 19:24.24 and the 10,000 in 39:16.19. Junior Aminata Kenyawani was eighth in the 5,000 in 19:40.25 and fifth in the 10,000 in 39:59.23, while junior Kayla Sisneros tallied eighth place in the 10,000 with a time of 41:11.71.

Also for ENMU’s women, sophomore Marta Pascoa took fourth place in the 3,000 steeplechase with a personal-best time of 12:08.85, sophomore Tamia Smith came in fifth in shot put at 43-6 1/4, and senior Torisha LaForce was eighth in the 400 with a clocking of 1:11.67.

ENMU’s men did not place anyone in the top eight in the meet. The closest the Greyhounds came to scoring was a ninth-place showing by junior Kelvin Kipkemboi in the 5,000 with a time of 15:39.31.

The Hounds are slated to wrap up their regular campaign on Sunday, returning to Canyon for WT’s Last Chance meet.
