Wolverines post twin bill sweep against Raton

PECOS — There’s a long way to go, but Texico’s four-time defending Class 2A state baseball champions got off to a solid start on Thursday.

The Wolverines posted a season-opening 9-4, 12-2 sweep of the Tigers in games played on the field of Texico’s District 6-2A rival, Pecos.

A five-run second put Texico in control in the opener and the Wolverines rode solid pitching from seniors John Myers and Gabe Bailey to victory. Raton scored all of its runs in the bottom of the seventh, helped by Texico’s only error of the contest.

Seniors Anton Goins and Gabe Bailey led the Wolverines’ 10-hit attack, each going 2-for-3. Goins drove in a run during the second-inning rally with a successful suicide squeeze bunt single.

Senior David Davalos belted a first-inning solo home run and struck out six in 2 1/3 innings in relief in Game 2. Texico erased a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the fourth, then ended it on the 10-run rule with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by two-run doubles from senior Troy Teague and junior Brayden Bender.

Left-hander Seth Griego, who started, and Davalos combined to hold the Tigers to just one hit. Meantime, the Wolverines clubbed 13 hits, with Davalos finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Goins and Teague both going 2-for-3 and all nine hitters getting at least one knock.

The Wolverines were slated to take on another 3A school, St. Michael’s, in a twin bill on Saturday.

Elida 5, Texico JV 4 — The Tigers rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth and held on at Texico in a game called after five innings by a time limit.

Each team managed only one hit in the contest. Sophomore right-hander Levi Victor and senior right-hander Teagan Burton combined to do the pitching chores for Elida.

Elida was slated to host Cimarron in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
