PORTALES — Dexter jumped to an early lead on Friday and handed Portales High a 7-3 loss in the first game of a scheduled softball doubleheader at Wheeler Park.
The second game of the twin bill was canceled after a lengthy lightning delay. The Lady Rams (0-2) were trailing 3-0 and had two on and one out in the bottom of the fifth when play was halted.
PHS was slated to return to action a doubleheader at Clovis on Saturday.
Junior Cashlin Fraze and sophomores Amanda Ornales and Kenzee Rowland all went 2-for-3 for the Lady Rams in the first contest. Dexter (7-2) finished with a 10-8 advantage in hits.
The Lady Demons scored three runs in the first and two in the third. Portales had one run in the third and two in the fifth, getting a run-scoring single from Fraze and a squeeze bunt single from junior Teagan Faust.
Senior Adrianna Garcia pitched a complete game for Portales.
PHS returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Ruidoso in a 5 p.m. single tilt.
Goddard sweeps Lady Cats — On Tuesday, Roswell Goddard improved to 6-0 for the season and posted its second doubleheader sweep of Clovis this season, winning 7-3 and 10-5 at Roswell.
The losses dropped the Lady Cats to a 1-5 record heading into Saturday’s home twin bill against PHS. After Saturday, Clovis’ next scheduled outing is in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Carlsbad on June 1 to start District 4-5A play.
