Texico keeps on rolling

TEXICO — The Texico Wolverines kept on rolling on Saturday as they bid for a fifth consecutive Class 2A state championship.

They scored 27 runs in a three-inning stretch spanning both games en route to a 20-1, 14-1 sweep of Pecos in a District 6-2A doubleheader.

Senior Seth Griego went a combined 5-for-7 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. Included were a pair of triples in Game 1.

Texico (10-1, 5-0 district) broke the opener wide open with nine runs in the third and six more in the fourth, then wasted no time taking control of the nightcap with a 12-run first. Senior Josh Myers added a two-run homer in the third inning.

Both games ended in 4 1/2 frames on the 10-run rule.

Freshman Freddy Davalos and senior Anton Goins combined for nine strikeouts in the first game, including seven over three innings by Davalos. Myers worked the first two innings of Game 2, striking out five, before senior Logan Bowman pitched three hitless innings and fanned seven.

The Panthers (3-6, 0-4) managed just three hits in the twin bill, scoring in the fifth inning of the first game and the first inning of the second contest.

Texico was slated to play a district doubleheader at Santa Rosa on Tuesday. The Wolverines have a single district tilt on tap at Clayton on Friday.

Texico JV 20, Elida 3 (Monday) — At Elida, the Wolverines reversed an earlier home loss to the Tigers in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Tristan Chavez and Oscar Estrada were both 3-for-4 and each drove in three runs for Texico, which scored six times in the second inning for an 8-1 lead. The Wolverines outhit Elida in the contest 20-2.

Easton Cooper worked three innings for the win, with Chavez pitching the final two.

For Elida (2-6), Gunner Thompson delivered an RBI single while Tyler Belcher had the other hit, also a single, and scored a run.

Elida is slated to host Dora in a District 1-2A doubleheader set for 2 p.m. on Friday.
