Wolverines wrap up district title

SANTA ROSA — Texico’s baseball team jumped all over Santa Rosa early and the Wolverines cruised to a 14-2, 14-5 District 6-2A sweep over the Lions on Tuesday.

Texico (12-1, 7-0) swept the three-game district series from Santa Rosa (7-3, 3-3) and has clinched first place in 6-2A and the automatic Class 2A state tournament berth that comes with it.

In Game 1, the Wolverines scored six runs in the first and finished off the Lions with a four-run sixth, ending the contest an inning early on the 10-run rule.

Senior Josh Griego threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 14 and walking three. Meantime, seniors Josh Myers and Logan Bowman combined to go 5-for-8, each collecting a double and four RBIs.

In the second game, Texico led 3-0 before scoring 11 runs over the final three frames. The Lions avoided the 10-run rule with a 5-spot in the bottom of the sixth.

Four pitchers combined on a three-hitter for Texico. Senior Freddy Davalos led a 13-hit Wolverines attack on offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Texico was slated to host Estancia in a single game on Saturday, starting a stretch of seven games over the final eight days of the regular season.
