Big innings prove costly to Lady Rams

PORTALES - Two big innings did in Portales High in the opener of the Lady Rams' District 4-4A and season-ending softball doubleheader on Tuesday.

In the second game, PHS was able to stay in contention most of the way, but Roswell Goddard walked away with a 12-0, 4-1 sweep at Wheeler Park.

The Lady Rockets (13-7, 7-5 district) broke a scoreless tie in the lidlifter with a six-run third inning, then added six more in the top of the sixth. The game ended after six on the 10-run rule.

Goddard posted 14 hits in the contest while holding Portales (2-16, 1-11) to just one - a second-inning bloop single to right field by sophomore Kenzee Rowland. Junior left-hander Adrianna Garcia went the distance in the circle for PHS.

In the second game, the Lady Rams took the lead in the first inning as junior Teagan Faust singled, stole second and eventually scored on a Lady Rockets error. Goddard tied it in the fourth, then tallied three times in the fifth and made it stand up.

The Lady Rockets had a 10-3 advantage in hits in that one - with Faust going 3-for-3 for Portales. Sophomore Alivia Gonzales threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run while walking none and striking out five.

First-year coach and former PHS player Amanda Bonner, who had no seniors on the squad this season, said the groundwork has been laid for the future.

"We were rebuilding this year," she said. "Next year we'll be reloaded and ready to play some softball."

Several of the Lady Rams' losses were competitive, including Tuesday's second game.

"We definitely got better throughout the season and fixed some things that were hurting us earlier," Bonner said. "It was definitely a learning year for all of us."

Lady Cats wrap up campaign at Roswell High - Clovis High's softball squad dropped its District 4-5A and season-ending twin bill at Roswell High on Thursday, losing the opener 4-3 and the nightcap 10-3 to the Lady Coyotes (7-13, 4-8 district).

On Tuesday night, in its home finale, the Lady Wildcats (4-16, 1-11) were swept 10-6 and 15-3 by Hobbs (11-9, 8-4).
