On this date ...

1951: Independence Day was being observed quietly in Clovis, and city and county peace officers were hoping safely and sanely, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

No formal programs or celebrations were planned in the city.

“Public activities in observance of the holiday here will be confined to the grand opening of the Youth Service Organization’s miniature golf course at Tenth and Main streets,” the newspaper reported.

The Clovis Rotary Club had supervised construction of the course. Matches were scheduled between civic leaders and businessmen at 7 p.m., when the course was officially slated to open.

1956: Area swim fans were looking forward to “one of the most outstanding swimming exhibitions ever to appear in Clovis,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.

U.S. Olympic team swimmers — eight men and two women — were planning an exhibition at Hillcrest Swimming Pool on July 10.

Tickets were $1 for adults, 50 cents for high school students and 25 cents for grade-school students. All proceeds were to help defray travel expenses for the team.

1966: Clovis’ La Fonda drive-in theater was showing “Arizona Raiders,” starring Audie Murphy and Gloria Talbott.

Fireworks were planned at intermission.
