Clovis man sentenced for drug charges

CLOVIS — A Clovis man was sentenced to 11 years in the Department of Corrections Tuesday for charges of possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence, according to a release from the district attorney's office.

Ernesto Martinez, 32, was found guilty of the charges June 23.

According to the release, Martinez, while a detainee at the Curry County Adult Detention Center, was observed trying to pass an item to another detainee. The item intercepted by detention officers contained methamphetamine, and during a search Martinez attempted to flush additional methamphetamine down the toilet.

Judge Drew Tatum's sentence included habitual offender designation, with Martinez convicted of prior felonies in Georgia and New Mexico.

The case was prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Stover. Martinez was represented by Sandra Gallagher of Clovis.
