Region recording more COVID-19 deaths

After more than a month without a COVID-19 related death, Curry-Roosevelt counties recorded three such deaths last week.

In addition, Clovis’ Plains Regional Medical Center has recorded two deaths this week related to the virus.

The New Mexico Department of Health on Monday announced 1,309 new infections of COVID-19 over the weekend, bringing the total case count to 215,098 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The counts included 52 new cases in Curry County and 21 new cases in Roosevelt County. Of the Curry County cases, 49 of them fell within the Clovis 88101 ZIP code. That was the fourth-highest number of COVID-19 cases by ZIP code, behind Carlsbad (84), Hobbs (69) and Roswell (55).

The state had, as of Monday, reported 4,425 total deaths of New Mexico residents related to COVID-19.

As of Monday, there were 190 people hospitalized in the state for COVID-19, the highest total since March 3 and nearly triple the 64 recorded on June 30. PRMC reported early Tuesday it had nine COVID-19 patients with three in intensive care.

The recent local deaths include a man in his 70s, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s. PRMC did not supply information on age or places of residence for this week’s victims.
