Update: The child referenced in the story succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday.
The region’s Major Crimes Unit has been activated to investigate a shooting Tuesday of a 4-year-old boy.
Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller said the child’s injury was “very serious” and “life-threatening.”
The child was flown to a medical facility in Lubbock early Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from Waller.
According to the news release:
About noon on Tuesday, deputies and the Clovis Fire Department responded to 1051 New Mexico 311 regarding the report of a 4-year-old child shot in the head.
The boy was immediately transported by ambulance to Plains Regional Medical Center, and then flown to Lubbock.
“It was determined that the child was at home with a parent when the injury occurred. The investigation into this matter is ongoing,” the news release stated.
Waller and District Attorney Andrea Reeb said no criminal charges had been filed late Tuesday.
"I have no indication from my contact with (law enforcement) that this was intentional," Reeb said.
"But it will of course be reviewed ... to see if any (criminal charges) are applicable, for example negligent child abuse. It's really premature to say as I still need to sit down with the MCU, review the case, the statements, etc.
"Either way," she said, "this is a very sad and tragic situation."
Authorities on Tuesday did not immediately identify anyone involved with the incident. Reeb said her office is working with officials from Cannon Air Force Base since one of the parents is in the Air Force.
We will have more information as it becomes available.
