Organizers say gate totals comparable to fairs before 2019.
PORTALES - Plenty to eat, plenty to do, plenty of visitors.
There was plenty of optimism Monday as the Roosevelt County Fair packed up its 2021 show.
The fair doesn't count attendance, but Board President Sheila Hays said gate totals were comparable to fairs before 2019. The 2019 gate was better, Hays believed, with musical guest Randall King bringing people to the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.
This year's fair began Aug. 16 with mostly setup, then kicked off with the Tuesday morning pork chop breakfast. The festivities continued with the standard events including the nightly carnival and the Friday junior livestock sale.
While county youth were selling their award-winning livestock in the pavilion, about a dozen competitors were prepping for the inaugural barbecue contest.
Hays said the event is definitely in the fold for 2022.
"The barbecue contest was fabulous; I think everybody really enjoyed it," Hays said. "It was a lot of food for the amount they charged. I think it was a great event for the fair."
When asked if there was anything that needed improvement or retooling, Hays said nothing immediately came to mind.
The fair's final day for the public was the Fiesta Day Sunday.
The fair board also saw a slight amount of transition, as Mark Clark and Rodney Tivis were elected to open seats on the board. Hays, Ryan Ainsworth and Dallan Skelley were retained as board members. The fair board is made up of 15 Roosevelt County citizens, with five three-year positions up for election annually.
