Frenship deals Cats all-time shellacking

WOLFFORTH, Texas — Behind a dominant effort from quarterback Chad Pharies, Frenship handed the Clovis Wildcats a historic loss on Friday night.

The host Tigers scored on nine of their 10 possessions, including four touchdown passes from Pharies, and limited Clovis to 107 yards in a 62-0 shellacking at Peoples Bank Stadium.

The setback was the worst in Wildcats history, topping a 49-0 loss to La Cueva in 2009, and the 0-3 start is the worst for Clovis since the 1998 team started the season 0-5.

“I don’t really know what to say after a game like that,” Cats coach Cal Fullerton said. “We’ll just try to keep everybody together.”

“They’re (Tigers) a real good football team. They were stacked all over, just deep everywhere.”

It is just the fourth time the Wildcats have allowed more than 60 in a game, and the first since a 62-59 overtime loss at Rio Rancho in 2013. In their previous three games giving up more than 60, Clovis lost all three by a combined 51 points.

Clovis moved the ball on its first possession, getting down near the Tigers’ 25 before turning it over on a fumble.

“Every series after that, it seemed like we had a penalty on first down,” Fullerton said. “Every series, it seemed like we were first-and-15 or first-and-20.”

The Tigers, meanwhile, are off to their best start in the five-year runoff coach Jay Northcutt and grabbed their second biggest win in school history.

Friendship (2-0) posted 543 yards on the night, with Pharies throwing for 258 yards and touchdowns of 32, 11, 5 and 75 to four different targets. Andrew Braddock was the favorite target on the night, catching four passes for 102 yards and a 75-yard score in the third quarter.

There was little for the Wildcats to celebrate on a night in which they only crossed midfield once, managed three first downs and had just 33 yards on 31 carries. Senior quarterback Milo Acosta completed eight passes for 72 yards, but threw two interceptions on Clovis’ three-turnover night.

Kash Roberts caught two passes for 31 yards to lead the Wildcats.

Frenship remains home this week with a clash against No. 5 Lubbock Cooper, while the Wildcats head west for a battle at Rio Rancho.
