TEXICO — Due to a number of positive COVID-19 tests for the New Mexico Military football team, Texico’s Friday night game against the Colts in Roswell was canceled.
Wolverines coach Bob Gilbreath said he informed his players after Wednesday’s practice.
“We scrambled around all day Thursday trying to find a game,” he said. “We just didn’t have any success.”
Gilbreath also announced this week’s game against Olton, scheduled for Friday night in Texico, has been moved to 10 a.m. on Saturday due to a conflict for officials.
Lamesa 24, Muleshoe 20 — The host Tornadoes scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second and third quarters to erase a 14-6 deficit and held off the Mules.
Muleshoe (1-1) put together a potent attack, compiling 20 first downs and more than 400 total yards. Sophomore Zeke Kasel rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown, while senior quarterback Zach Hasley threw for 189 yards and two TDs.
Lamesa (2-0), which finished with 316 total yards, broke on top early when it returned a pass interception to the end zone.
Melrose 68, Dulce 0 — Have a game, Michael Cardonita.
In a neutral-field game played at Estancia, Cardonita scored five first-quarter touchdowns, including two in the game’s first minute.
The sophomore quarterback ran for touchdowns of 70, 14, 20 and 15 yards in the opening stanza. In between he picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards to the house.
Playing their season opener, the Buffaloes opened a 44-0 lead by the end of the opening stanza against the Hawks (0-2). Freshman Josiah Roybal took over in the second quarter, throwing a pair of touchdown passes, while the Buffs also added a safety when junior end Dylan Draper brought down a Dulce running back behind the goalline.
Gateway Christian 53, Elida 0 — At Elida, the Tigers ran into a buzzsaw in their 6-man District 2 opener as the Warriors limited them to 69 total yards and forced four fumbles. Elida never reached Gateway Christian territory.
Senior quarterback Hurley Breedyk threw for five touchdowns for Gateway (3-0), including a 34-yarder to senior Caleb Bogel on the first play of the second half to end it on the 50-point mercy rule.
Elida (1-2, 0-1) plays at Roosevelt County and district rival Floyd in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
