CLOVIS — Saturday’s girls soccer matchup between Clovis High and Alamogordo at Leon Williams Stadium was postponed due to light rain and lightning. Lady Wildcats coach Ray Rodriguez said the schools hope to be able to reschedule.
Also, the Lady Cats were slated to play at Manzano on Friday and at Sandia on Saturday this week. The Sandia match remains on the slate for Saturday, but the Friday tilt against Manzano has been moved to 3 p.m. on Monday, Rodriguez said.
Lovington 6, Clovis 0 (boys, Saturday) — Three players scored two goals apiece and host Lovington, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and in the top five overall in the state by MaxPreps, improved to 4-0 with a shutout win.
Senior forward/midfielder Cristian Mendoza scored the first and last goals for Lovington, while junior forward/midfielder Kevin Gallegos added two tallies before halftime and senior forward/midfielder Angel Salcido netted the first two after the intermission.
“We couldn’t generate anything,” CHS boys coach Greg Trujillo said. “They looked like they’d been in the weight room. They really outplayed us today.”
Lovington went in as the Class 4A favorite in last year’s state playoffs, only to lose to Albuquerque Academy 2-1 in the finals. Not much has changed this season.
“I think they’ll go deep (in the playoffs) again this year,” Trujillo said. “They’ve got three guys who can score at will if you don’t defend them.”
Lovington outshot the Cats (1-5) on goal 9-3 and had an 8-4 margin in corner kicks.
After Tuesday’s matchup with the Rams, the next outing for the Cats is at 6 p.m. on Thursday when they visit Roswell Goddard.
PHS splits at East Mountain — The Portales High girls soccer team extended its winning streak to four on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over East Mountain at Sandia Park.
The contest was called about midway through the second half due to lightning. Despite that, the boys match was eventually played and the Timberwolves (2-3) posted a 3-1 victory over Portales.
“I think we’re just kind of building momentum,” PHS girls coach Bonnie Britton said. “All the work we’ve put in is just translating for us on the field.”
At press time, no details were available on either match.
The Lady Rams (4-2) travel to Las Vegas Robertson in a 5 p.m. start on Thursday, while both Portales squads are in action again on Saturday at West Las Vegas, beginning with the girls tilt at 2 p.m.
