Pages past, Sept. 19: Having good breakfast helps you glow

On this date ...

1961: Mrs. J.P. Steiner’s second-grade students at Lindsey School in Portales had been introduced to a “good breakfast,” the Portales News-Tribune reported.

The students were seated at three tables covered with tablecloths. Two tables had flower centerpieces and a bowl of fruit for decoration.

The menu consisted of cantaloupe balls, orange juice, oatmeal, milk and cinnamon toast.

“They called this their ‘go, glow, grow’ breakfast,” the newspaper reported. That’s because it “supplies the elements needed for energy, sparkling health and growth.”

Students included Dorothy Tapia, Sharon Nunn, Linda Rowland, Henry Apodaca, Coy Don Wall, Joy Morgan, Jerry Garcia and Vernie Davis.

Most of them asked for seconds, PNT reported.
