CHS improves to 10-1-1

CLOVIS - Clovis High's girls finished out their pre-district schedule in style on Thursday night, posting a 3-0 victory over Roswell Goddard at Leon Williams Stadium.

Senior forward Nevaeh Coronado and junior forward/midfielder Caley Adams combined for the Lady Wildcats' goals, two by Coronado, and each assisted on the other's tallies.

Clovis extended a 1-0 lead with two goals over the final 10 minutes.

"I think we probably played a pretty complete game," Lady Cats coach Ray Rodriguez said. "Most of the shots we had on-goal were solid opportunities. The girls were really patient, and I was satisfied with our effort on both ends (of the pitch)."

CHS is idle until Sept. 24 when it begins District 4-5A action against Class 5A top-ranked Carlsbad (13-0-0) at Leon Williams Stadium. The four teams in the district have so far combined for a 41-5-2 record, and have outscored their opponents 240-41.

"It's going to be a tough district," Rodriguez said. "It's going to be up for grabs, I think."

On Friday, the CHS boys (2-9) absorbed a 10-0 loss to Volcano Vista (6-3) at Albuquerque.

Portales sweeps Ruidoso - On Thursday, PHS notched a 4-3 win over the Lady Warriors in the girls matchup while the boys posted a 5-3 victory on at the PHS pitch.

The Lady Rams (6-4) bounced back from Tuesday's loss at Clovis to improve to 6-4 for the season. Junior forward Jolie Griffith's goal with just over 20 minutes left put PHS in front for good 3-2.

"We keep talking with the girls about working hard and setting goals," PHS girls coach Bonnie Britton said. "We see them working and trying to get better every day. People are starting to notice Lady Rams soccer, and that feels good."

Senior forward/midfielder Alexa Cape had a pair of goals for the Lady Warriors (1-8).

Meantime, the PHS boys earned their first victory of the campaign as freshman forward Elijah Tellez scored two goals and had an assist.

Freshman Gabriel Duran's tally put the Rams (1-3) in front for good 3-2 late in the half. Meantime, Selvin Lopez added a pair of goals for Portales.

"We played well today," Rams coach Ruben Tellez said. "Like we told the kids, 'You've got to keep working hard.' For 80 minutes, we played with intensity."

The Rams had a Saturday clash against New Mexico Military in Roswell. The boys are slated to visit Clovis at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and play at Roswell Goddard in a 6 p.m. contest on Thursday.

Both PHS squads are at home next Saturday against East Mountain, with the girls playing first at 1 p.m.

Clovis girls 8, Portales 2 (Tuesday) - At Leon Williams Stadium, the young Lady Rams gave CHS a tussle most of the way before Clovis put it out of reach with four goals in the final 10 minutes.

"I think we're improving," said Britton, whose squad had won five of its previous six matches. "I just think we played a really good game, being able to go up against a team like that."

Senior forward/midfielder Zoe Roy put Portales in front in the fifth minute, and the Lady Rams tied the match 2-2 at halftime when Griffith scored with about 14 minutes to go in the stanza.

But the Lady Cats controlled the second half, taking the lead in the 55th minute when Caley Adams tallied off an assist from Coronado.

Clovis outshot the Lady Rams on goal for the match 22-3.

Senior midfielder Illeana Griego had three goals, including both first-half tallies, for the Lady Cats. Coronado and senior midfielder Luisa Chavez each collected a pair of goals and an assist.

"We were just lackadaisical (early)," Rodriguez said. "The second half we were moving the ball and passing better."
