No. 12 Angelo posts 1-0 win over ENMU

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team hung in there for more than a half on Saturday against 12th-ranked Angelo State, but the Rambelles got a penalty-kick goal from junior midfielder Valerie Solis early in the second stanza and made it stand up for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference victory.

ASU (6-1, 1-1 LSC) rebounded from a conference-opening loss and dominated play for the most part, but the Greyhounds (2-5, 0-2) made the Rambelles — coached by former ENMU coach Travis McCorkle — work hard for the win despite being outshot 21-1 overall and 9-0 on goal.

ASU recorded its 14th consecutive win over ENMU, dating to 2014.

The Hounds held Angelo off the scoreboard until sophomore midfielder Selena Casias was given a yellow card for a handball inside the penalty area in the 53rd minute. Solis was able to convert the penalty kick for her first goal of the campaign.

ENMU’s next outing is on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. (MDT) conference matchup at Midwestern State.

Volleyball team falls — ENMU never really got going on Saturday and dropped its second LSC matchup of the weekend, a 25-21, 25-10, 25-16 decision to Texas-Permian Basin at Greyhound Arena.

Senior outside hitters Isela Murrillo and Aquincia Strambler had 10 kills each for the Falcons (7-4, 2-1 LSC). Meantime, senior outside hitter Jasmine Gannon led ENMU (1-11, 1-3) with seven kills, while Portales freshman libero Kinzie Davis collected 14 digs.

The Hounds made a late run in the first set, pairing a 19-12 deficit to two points with a 7-2 surge featuring a kill by Gannon and a combo block by junior middle blocker Jordan O’Connor-Dempsey and freshman outside hitter Mikaela Garvin before UTPB pulled away.

In Game 2, the Falcons opened a quick 12-1 and never looked back to take a stranglehold on the meet. ENMU led 5-4 early in the third after a kill by Gannon, but UTPB promptly went on a 10-1 surge and never relinquished control.

ENMU’s next outing will be at 5 p.m. (MDT) on Wednesday in a conference clash at rival West Texas A&M.
