CLOVIS — Clovis High’s boys tried to hang with Hobbs in a District 4-5A soccer match on Saturday at Leon Williams Stadium. Coach Greg Trujillo said the Wildcats just didn’t have it.
Hobbs got a goal late in the first half and another towards the end of the contest to secure a 3-0 victory over the Cats. Meantime, the Eagles’ defense held Clovis without a shot on goal.
“We came out and played very flat,” Trujillo said. “We knew they were going to move the ball all over the place, but we just had no energy.”
Senior forward/midfielder Giovanni Medina put the Eagles (12-4, 2-1 district) in front in the fourth minute, and he added the final tally with under three minutes to go.
In between, sophomore Joshua Chavez scored just before halftime for a 2-0 lead.
“They had a shot that was off our keeper’s hands and went in,” Trujillo said. “We didn’t have the energy to react.”
Hobbs had nine shots on goal, with junior goalkeeper D.J. Maldonado collecting six saves for the Cats (4-13, 1-2).
Clovis was slated to host Carlsbad, a team it edged 2-1 in the district opener at Carlsbad on Tuesday night. The Cats then have a 3 p.m. rematch at Hobbs on Saturday.
