1931: Clovis sportsmen took to “rough country” today (Saturday) and by Monday night they were expected to be in the heart of New Mexico wilds, awaiting dawn Tuesday for the beginning of the deer season.
That’s how the Clovis Evening News-Journal described the day’s top news.
“Hunters began pulling out of Clovis in westerly and southerly directions early today. Parties will be leaving throughout today, Sunday and Monday. A large number are going into the Gila River country, and a large number are going into the southern part of the state.”
The largest local hunting party included G.A. Campbell, M.E. Janeway, Cash Ramey and other prominent residents whose names are still recognized today.
A second group included Rev. Clyde Barton, Lt. Gov. A. W. Hockenhull and Daniel Boone.
A number of Texico nimrods also were leaving this weekend for the Black Range country in the Black Canyon area in search of deer, the newspaper reported.
