PORTALES - After trailing much of the way, Oklahoma Christian took advantage of a penalty-kick opportunity with just over a minute remaining in regulation on Wednesday, allowing the Eagles to squeeze past Eastern New Mexico University 2-1 in Lone Star Conference women's soccer at Greyhound Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Ellise Foreman converted the kick with 1:12 left after the Greyhounds (2-8-1, 0-5-1 LSC) were called for a foul in the box.
ENMU jumped in front in the 26th minute when Eagles goalkeeper Gabby Goddard came out to try and collect a loose ball, and in the scrum that ensued Hounds freshman defender Elita Casias pumped a shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate tally.
The Eagles (2-5-3, 2-2-3) tied it about 15 minutes into the second stanza when sophomore defender Jordan Freidenbloom's long shot slipped past ENMU senior keeper Whitney Dockweiler.
It was just the second meeting between the programs. ENMU thumped OC 5-2, also at Greyhound Stadium, in October 2019 - the Eagles' first year in the LSC.
Arkansas-Fort Smith tops Hounds - ENMU's volleyball team managed leads in all three sets on Friday night, but Arkansas-Fort Smith used significant runs in each to pull away and notch a 25-19, 25-11, 25-17 win at Greyhound Arena.
ENMU (1-15, 1-7 LSC) dropped its eighth match in a row. The Hounds have captured just four games during that time.
Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Crownover paced the Lady Lions (9-9, 4-5) with nine kills and a couple of aces, while senior defensive specialist Jazzlyn Wells chipped in 11 digs and freshman outside hitter/setter Chloe Alderson had 30 assists to go with three aces. ENMU had four players - senior outside hitter Jasmine Gannon, sophomore middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs, junior middle blocker Adriana Puni and freshman outside hitter Mikaela Garvin - with six kills apiece.
Two kills and an ace by Puni sparked the Hounds from an 8-4 deficit into a 16-15 lead in Game 1, but Fort Smith quickly recovered to put it away with 10 of the final 13 points of the set.
The Lady Lions erased a 4-3 deficit in Game 2, dominating the set to the tune of 22-7.
In Game 3, Stubbs' early kill helped get the Hounds out to a 7-3 advantage. Trailing 10-9, UAFS strung together an 8-1 surge to wrest control, and finished it with the final five points of the contest.
UAFS is now 2-0 all-time against the Hounds. The teams' earlier meeting came in 2015, before the Lady Lions joined the LSC.
ENMU hosted Oklahoma Christian in LSC action on Saturday. Next week, the Hounds travel to Cameron on Friday and to Midwestern State on Saturday for conference meets.
