Hounds snap eight-match losing streak

PORTALES — Senior outside hitter Jasmine Gannon collected her seventh double-double of the campaign and Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team severed an eight-match losing streak with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 Lone Star Conference sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

The Texico High grad posted match highs of 17 kills and 12 digs as the Greyhounds (2-15, 2-7 LSC) won for the first time since taking their LSC opener in five sets at Texas A&M-Commerce on Sept. 17.

Sophomore middle blocker Gracelyn Stubbs had seven kills and 12 blocks for ENMU. Junior middle blocker Adriana Puni totaled six blocks, including two solos, while junior setter Rae Sapiga posted a match-high 22 assists.

For the Eagles (6-13, 2-8), sophomore outside hitter Caitlynne Hudgens notched six kills and 10 digs.

The first set was tight until ENMU went on a late 5-0 burst, featuring two kills by Gannon and two blocks by Puni, for a 23-18 advantage.

There were 12 ties and eight lead changes in Game 2. Down 22-21, the Hounds rallied for four of the final five points with freshman outside hitter Mikaela Garvin and Portales freshman libero Kinzie Davis each contributing a kill.

Finally, in the third set, the Hounds grabbed early command, leading 9-3 as four players each contributed a kiil. Then, with the score 19-15, Gannon had two kills and Puni another in a match-ending 6-3 surge.

ENMU posted margins of 43-26 in kills and 60-47 in digs against the Eagles.

It was the first meeting ever between the teams. Oklahoma Christian joined the LSC in 2019.

Next weekend, the Hounds hit the road for matches at Cameron on Friday and at Midwestern State on Saturday.

Dustdevils rally past ENMU — Sophomore forward Krysan St. Louis personally erased a two-goal deficit with a hat trick — her first three goals of the season — and Texas A&M International rallied for a 3-2 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over ENMU on Saturday at Laredo, Texas.

Senior forward/midfielder Katie Stice gave the Hounds (2-9-1, 0-6-1 LSC) a 2-0 lead with her team-leading fourth and fifth goals of the season, coming in a span of two minutes near the end of the half. But St. Louis tallied twice in a 5 1/2-minute span early in the second stanza, then collected the match-winner on an assist from senior forward Tritch Ann Grant in the final minute of the first of two sudden-death OTs.

ENMU absorbed its first loss to the Dustdevils, now standing 4-1-1 all-time. The next outing for the Hounds is on Wednesday in a conference tilt at Texas-Permian Basin.
