DOT participating in safety month

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Transportation Department is participating in Pedestrian Safety Month, with Sunday’s Halloween activities a focal point.

“Halloween evening is one of the most dangerous times for pedestrians, especially children but trick-or-treaters aren’t the only ones who need to watch out,” said Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval. “Drivers and walkers bear dual responsibility for pedestrian safety, and that is true all year long.”

According to a New Mexico Department of Transportation release, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association ranked New Mexico as the top state for pedestrian fatalities per capita (64 total in 2020). Additionally, children are three times more likely to be struck and killed by a vehicle on Halloween than any other day of the year.

The DOT provided various tips on both sides of the issue.

• Trick-or-treaters are advised to use reflective tape if possible on clothes, costumes and trick-or-treat bags, bring flashlights or glow sticks, cross streets only at intersections.

• Motorists are advised to watch their speed and be prepared for sudden stops, buckle up children regardless of trip length and practice defensive driving.

• The department advises everybody to stay off their phones, with distracted walking and driving major factors in accidents.
