Steers, Mustangs seek district titles

BOVINA - All is quiet on the New Mexico area small-school football front this weekend. Clovis Christian and Elida were ousted in the first round of the 6-man playoffs last week, while Texico and Melrose have first-round byes in Class 2A and 8-man, respectively.

It's not so quiet on the Texas side, however, with all three teams engaging in meaningful contests.

Farwell visits Panhandle with the District 1-2A Division I title on the line, while Bovina hosts New Home in its regular-season finale seeking to lock up the District 2-2A Division II crown.

Meantime, with a 42-38 win on Friday at Amarillo River Road, Muleshoe's chances of a high finish in District 2-3A Division I look much brighter. The Mules will be at home on Friday to face Dalhart.

All games are scheduled for 7 p.m. (CDT) kicks.

Farwell (3-0, 7-1) and Panhandle (3-0, 3-5) played for the top spot last year, and the Panthers ran away with a 56-21 victory at Farwell.

Panhandle played a challenging pre-district slate against foes who have a combined record of 35-6. It includes three 2A Division II teams as well as Shallowater (3A Division I) and Childress (3A Division II).

Since the start of district play, the Panthers have blown out their three opponents to the tune of 163-46.

Both teams will easily be in the playoffs, but the winner gets the district's top seed and, ostensibly, a more favorable playoff route.

Farwell finishes next week at home against Olton (5-3, 1-2) while Panhandle takes on Sanford-Fritch (3-5, 2-1).

The Steers come into Friday's game No. 16 in 2A-I MaxPreps rankings, while the Panthers are 24th.

Bovina (4-5, 3-0), which also had a tough pre-district schedule, has ground out three wins in district play. The Mustangs are guaranteed no worse than the district's No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

New Home (5-3, 2-0) is ranked 32nd in 2A-II by MaxPreps, while Bovina is No. 40.

Muleshoe (3-5, 1-1) and Dalhard (2-6, 1-1) are currently tied for second in five-team District 3A-I, but the Wolves are coming off a 73-9 thrashing at the hands of district-leading Bushland.

The Mules and Wolves each stands a reasonable chance of making the postseason, but the win over River Road (5-4, 1-2) puts Muleshoe in a more favorable position.

Muleshoe wraps up its regular campaign next week at rival Littlefield (3-5, 0-2), while Dalhart hosts River Road.
