Pages past, Oct. 31: Hunters expected to flood fields

On this date ...

1941: State officials estimated 20,000 hunters would be in the fields and hills of New Mexico starting Nov. 1 for the beginning of deer season.

State Game Warden Elliott S. Barker predicted game would be “unusually fat” and distributed around the state better than usual because good feed and water had been found everywhere.

“The fact that deer will be scattered over larger areas than usual may give the impression that they are scarce, but such, we believe, is not the case,” Barker said.

The turkey crop, he said, would be better than last year, especially in the southern part of the state.

Local hunters throughout the region had started leaving the past two days so they could be ready at first light Nov. 1.

“Jack Carr, David Russell and John Cantrell are planning to hunt deer by bow and arrow in the special reserve in the Sandia mountains near Albuquerque,” the Portales Daily News reported.

“D.H. Smith Jr. left this morning to join Emmett White at Roswell, from where they will head into the hills near Carlsbad.

“Billy Inge bought his hunting license and leaves today for the Sacramentos … Unless he secured a gun, he will have to throw rocks or use a bow and arrow.”
