1971: A proposal to allow Sunday liquor sales in Clovis had been soundly defeated, 1,881 votes to 559.
Ten of the 11 voting precincts said no to the option. Only the voting site at La Casita said yes, 49 votes to 27.
Voters also approved a plan to lease Clovis' Memorial Hospital to a non-profit corporation by a 2-to-1 margin.
More than 3,200 votes participated in the election, about 700 more than officials had anticipated based on other “off-year” elections.
About 29 percent of the city's 11,381 registered voters cast ballots, which also featured 10 constitutional amendments.
One amendment that passed broadened the constitutional language allowing citizens to keep and bear arms. Clovis voters approved, 2,352 to 462. State voters also approved the measure.
A proposal to make water cooperatives tax exempt was overwhelmingly defeated, 1,746 to 870 in Clovis. State voters also rejected the plan.
