Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — The Clovis Community College Board of Trustees welcomed its latest member, and honored a pair of retirees during its Wednesday meeting.
Jan Bradburn was sworn in prior to the 40-minute meeting, which The News covered virtually.
The trustees voted 4-0 to approve emeritus status for Jan Williams and Tina Zachry, who both retired earlier this year.
Williams spent 30 years with the college as a health and physical education instructor. Classes taught by Williams included weight training, aqua aerobics, first aid, CPR and walking and conditioning. In the last decade, she taught dance appreciation and coaching and history of physical education. She also provided frequent employee opportunities for preventative health management activities and organized community activities like on-campus blood drives.
Zachry left the college as director of systems and networking, and was part of the information technology staff for 25 years. A nomination form noted her service, experience and expertise were “incomparable, unrivaled and greatly appreciated.”
In other business at the Wednesday meeting:
• Trustees heard a report on the college’s financial aid office from Director April Chavez. During the 2020-21 academic year, the college disbursed $5.02 million in various forms of aid.
• The board heard the college’s annual security report. The report included one report of motor vehicle theft in 2019 and no report of any other crime in 2020. Chair Lora Harlan said the news was obviously good, even though it helped that the campus was closed to the public for much of 2020.
• Heather Lovato, chief financial officer for the college, told trustees there was nothing out of the ordinary in the financial report for the first quarter of 2021-22.
• The board approved an $847,609 agreement with K. Barnett and Sons for parking renovations on the south side of campus. The work will cover 109,780 square feet of parking.
Trustee Carolyn Spence asked how reliable the quote was, given recent supply chain issues. Norman Kia, Vice President for IT and Operations, said he didn’t have any concerns as the bid was fairly recent and the work should be done in a matter of weeks.
• The board will hold a special meeting 8 a.m. Wednesday to consider healthcare and retirement benefit plans for employees. It will be the third consecutive week with a meeting for the trustees, including the Oct. 27 meeting when trustees appointed Bradburn to the board.
