Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Texas Tech has hired Baylor assistant coach Joey McGuire as its head football coach, the school announced Monday.
McGuire replaces Matt Wells, who was fired Oct. 25 after posting a 13-17 record in two-plus seasons. He will leave the Bears immediately for the Red Raiders, but will not take over the program until after the season.
"We are excited for this new chapter in Texas Tech Football under the direction of coach McGuire," Texas Tech Kirby Hocutt said. "Our search committee was impressed from the outset not only with his significant ties throughout the state of Texas but his enthusiasm and desire to serve as the head coach at Texas Tech. We are thrilled to be able to welcome Coach McGuire and his wife Debbie to our Red Raider family."
McGuire has been on the Baylor staff since 2017, first under Matt Rhule and now under Dave Aranda. He has coached a variety of positions, including tight ends, outside linebackers and defensive ends, and is currently the Bears' associate head coach.
Prior to joining the Baylor staff, McGuire was a highly successful coach at Cedar Hill High School just outside Dallas. In 12 seasons, he won 141 games, seven district titles and three state championships.
Texas Tech's hiring of McGuire leaves four head-coaching openings at Power 5 schools: USC, LSU, TCU and Washington State. Also open at the FBS level are Connecticut, Akron and Massachusetts.
