1951: Peru State Teachers College scored twice in the fourth quarter, coming from behind to beat Eastern New Mexico University, 19-7.
The loss was the first of the season for the Greyhounds. It was also the 'Hounds first loss since the previous season, when they also lost to Peru, 20-13.
“The Greyhounds still have a conference championship and a lot of pleasant memories from the highly successful 1951 football season,” the Portales Daily News reported.
Three touchdown passes were the difference in the game, the newspaper reported, including two long ones in the final stanza. Peru attempted only six passes in the game, completing four.
ENMU held a 7-6 lead at halftime after recovering a fumble on Peru's 9-yard line. “Charlie Painter crashed over from the one,” for the Silver Pack's only touchdown, the paper reported.
Peru State College, located in Peru, Neb., still plays football in NAIA Division I today. The Bobcats are 7-3 this season, 3-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Peru State, founded by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1865, is the oldest institution in Nebraska.
