1931: Letters to Santa Claus were beginning to appear in area newspapers, including The Portales Valley News.
A sampling:
A boy named Ben from Kenna wanted a boy doll, a barn full of animals and a sled. He was 7 and in the second grade.
Herbert Lewis Morphis of Portales asked for a tractor, truck and candy, plus nuts and fruit. Herbert also asked Santa to remember his little sister Athel Lois, 2, who wanted a doll and a set of dishes.
Nadine McCabe of Elida wanted a baby doll “about 22 inches tall,” and a little violin.
Gordon Earl Creek of Portales said he was “trying to be a good boy” and asked for a foot ball plus a blue shirt.
Leonard Hicks of Dora asked for a big wagon.
