Pages past, Nov. 14: Dear Santa: Nadine wants a little violin

On this date ...

1931: Letters to Santa Claus were beginning to appear in area newspapers, including The Portales Valley News.

A sampling:

A boy named Ben from Kenna wanted a boy doll, a barn full of animals and a sled. He was 7 and in the second grade.

Herbert Lewis Morphis of Portales asked for a tractor, truck and candy, plus nuts and fruit. Herbert also asked Santa to remember his little sister Athel Lois, 2, who wanted a doll and a set of dishes.

Nadine McCabe of Elida wanted a baby doll “about 22 inches tall,” and a little violin.

Gordon Earl Creek of Portales said he was “trying to be a good boy” and asked for a foot ball plus a blue shirt.

Leonard Hicks of Dora asked for a big wagon.
