Lady Rams ousted in 4A state volleyball

RIO RANCHO - Unfortunately, it was a short stay for Portales in the Class 4A state volleyball tournament.

Seeded No. 8, the Lady Rams faced top seed Hope Christian in Friday's opening round and lost to the Huskies 25-16, 25-18, 25-13 before being eliminated by fourth-seeded Gallup 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, 25-20 later in the day.

"Things just didn't go right," first-year Lady Rams coach Jacki Bailey said. "But I'm really proud of what we did this season."

Two other members of District 4-4A were still alive heading into Saturday's afternoon play.

Artesia, seeded seventh coming in, upended second-seeded district foe Roswell Goddard in five sets in the first round on Friday morning, then beat Santa Teresa in four to advance to the semifinal round. Meantime, the Lady Rockets rebounded with wins over third-seeded Los Alamos 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 on Friday afternoon and 25-8, 25-12, 25-19 on Saturday morning to advance to the semis and earn another date with the Lady Bulldogs.

Hope (22-2) took control early against PHS (17-9) and never let go. The only double-figure stat of the match for Portales was a 13-dig showing by senior libero Teagan Faust.

The Lady Rams made the match with No. 4 Gallup (19-6) more competitive, squaring the contest with a tight second-set win and pushing the Lady Bengals in the final two cantos. Senior Kylyie Paden had 15 kills, 12 digs, six aces and three blocks in that one, while senior Adrianna Garcia chipped in 10 kills and four blocks.

Senior setter Riley Shillings also had a double-double with 10 digs and 26 set assists. Faust had 24 digs in the match, and senior setter Angelica Maestas contributed 15 assists and four aces.
