No. 8 Hagerman advances past Lady Wolverines

RIO RANCHO — Texico’s bid for a return to the Class 2A state finals came up short on Saturday as the Lady Wolverines bowed to eighth-seeded Hagerman 25-14, 25-18, 25-16 in a losers bracket match.

Veteran Texico coach Kristen Scanlan said her team just couldn’t muster up the energy it needed against the Lady Bobcats (16-9).

“We just didn’t play very well,” Scanlan said. “They had a lot of off-speed shots that we couldn’t dig up.”

Senior Jalissa Harrison had eight kills for the second-seeded Lady Wolvferines (18-7), while senior Cassidy Haakma posted six kills and a team-best 15 digs.

On Friday, the Lady Wolverines got past seventh-seeded Tatum 26-24, 25-21, 25-19 before losing in the quarterfinal round to No. 3 Laguna Acoma 25-21, 25-12, 25-21.

Against Tatum (16-8), Haakma had 12 kills, Harrison 9 and senior Skyler Schaap eight for Texico. Sophomore Avery Pipkin collected 19 digs while junior Cately Breshears posted a double-double with 17 digs and 20 assists.

In the loss to the Lady Hawks (21-4), Pipkin recorded 29 digs while Harrison notched eight kills and two blocks and Breshears had nine assists and eight digs.
