MULESHOE — Led by Muleshoe, the three Texas area girls basketball teams have combined to get off to a 5-0 start this season.
The Lady Mules (2-0) opened their season with a pair of home games, turning back Hale Center 53-42 on Nov. 6 and Lubbock Trinity Christian 45-31 on Tuesday night.
Muleshoe built a 24-18 halftime lead, then outscored Hale Center 12-7 in the final canto to put the game away. Junior Kylie Hernandez notched 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and senior Natalie Ambriz added 13 for the Lady Mules, while junior Makayla Espinosa led the Lady Owls (1-1) with 11 points and sophomore Marlyah Espinosa had nine.
Tuesday night, Muleshoe overcame a six-point second-quarter deficit to lead 25-24 at halftime, then limited Trinity Christian to just seven second-half tallies. Ambriz put in 20 points for the Lady Mules in that one, while Hernandez added 10.
Bovina posts pair of wins — The Fillies went on the road for their first two games, beating Lazbuddie 63-18 on Nov. 6 before taking a neutral-court contest from Texline 58-25 on Tuesday at Channing H.S.
All 13 players scored for the Fillies against Lazbuddie, and 11 of 13 tallied against Texline. Senior Pilly Saenz and junior Alyssa Marquez netted 10 points each in the win over Lazbuddie, while Marquez scored 10 and sophomore Lesley Esparza added eight against Texline.
Leading 10-6, the Fillies outscored Lazbuddie 25-3 over the middle two stanzas. They then outscored Texline 36-11 in the second half to run away with that one.
Lady Blue gets past Abernathy — Farwell got a pair of 3-pointers from sophomore Chloee Whitten — her only points of the game — during a 16-4 second-quarter surge that sparked the Farwell past Abernathy on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams at Farwell.
Junior Jaelyn Smith also had six of her team-high 13 points in the stanza, helping the Lady Blue open a 30-17 lead at halftime.
Landri Richey added 12 points and Makyla Baldwin 10 as nine players contributed to the scoring column for Farwell.
