Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Organizations prepping Thanksgiving meals

Thanksgiving food baskets will be handed out on Friday at the Curry County Events Center that will include a turkey, pie, potatoes and other holiday meal items. Also, on Thanksgiving Day, meals will be served free of charge at the Lighthouse Mission in Clovis and the Memorial Building in Portales.

Friday’s distribution of 400 food baskets will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the events center on a first come, first served basis, according to a Curry County government news release. The Curry County Health Council and Mental Health Resources are teaming up for the event.

The Community Outreach of the First United Methodist Church in Portales is prepared to serve 400 to 500 holiday meals on Thanksgiving Day at the Memorial Building, at Seventh Street and Abilene Avenue, Portales. Organizers noted there will not be meal delivery service this year.

The meal is free of charge, but donations that will help provide meals in Juarez, Mexico, and Milagro, Peru, for Christmas are welcome, according to a flyer for the Thanksgiving Day event.

Persons who wish to volunteer can call the mission at 575-762-1933, and leave a name and phone number to be contacted later, Montoya said.
