Pages past, Nov. 21: Bottomless Lakes gives up Cadillac

On this date ...

1961: Police in Roswell had gone searching Bottomless Lakes for a car stolen in Roswell. Instead, they found one reported missing from Portales five months earlier.

A 1954 Cadillac was recovered from Figure Eight Lake in Bottomless Lakes Park by state police skindivers, officials said. Correspondence found in the glove compartment identified it as the missing Portales vehicle.

The car was reported missing June 12 by Charles McCubbins of Portales, who said it was taken from the front of his home overnight.

State police at Roswell said stolen cars were periodically found in the Lakes, which was the reason they made a routine search for the stolen Roswell vehicle, which was not recovered.
