Lady Blue topples 6A Odessa High

LUBBOCK — Farwell’s girls proved on Friday that they don’t mind playing up a few notches in classification.

The Class 2A Lady Blue put together a 41-point second half, erasing a 10-point deficit, and posted a 62-57 victory over Class 6A Odessa High in a neutral-court game played at Lubbock Christian’s Rip Griffin Arena.

Eight players contributed points for the Lady Blue, led by freshman Bella Jaime with 17 points and junior Charlie May Trimble with 16. Farwell (8-1) has now won five in a row.

For the Lady Broncos (2-5), junior Deoshanay Henderson led the way with 19 points, while seniors Nesha Stephens and Nevaeh Carrasco both finished with 11.

In area girls tournaments on Friday:

American Heritage Bank Classic — At Melrose, the hosts Lady Buffs cruised into Saturday’s championship game against Clayton with a 44-14 thrashing of Quemado.

Isabelle Sena had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for Melrose (2-0), scoring 11 of hers in the opening half. Clayton (2-0) got past Hagerman 63-47 in the other semifinal.

In consolation semifinals, Grady (1-1) held the Roswell Goddard junior varsity scoreless in the third quarter and eked out a 29-27 win over the Lady Rockets. Lexi Pinon tallied seven points for Goddard.

In the other matchup, Hagerman pulled away in the third quarter to hand Floyd (0-2) a 51-15 setback. Sophomore Natalie Gomez had 17 points and senior Isabelle Flores 11 for the Lady Bobcats (1-1), while sophomore Jena Baros netted 13 for Floyd.

J.P. Stone Invitational — At Dora, the host Lady Coyotes earned a spot in Saturday’s title matchup against Logan with a 40-27 win over the Portales junior varsity. The Lady Coyotes (1-1) erased a one-point halftime deficit, outscoring the Lady Rams 12-2 in the final stanza.

Sophomore Faith Jasso poured in 16 points and sophomore Breanna Rodriguez added 10 for Dora. Meantime, Logan advanced with a 57-33 win over Roy/Mosquero.

In boys tournament play on Friday:

American Heritage Bank Classic — Tatum upset the apple cart at Melrose, posting a 38-36 win over the host Buffaloes and advancing to Saturday’s title tilt against Hagerman, a 63-47 winner over Clayton.

The Coyotes (2-0) had the advantage in only one quarter — 12-7 in the second — but it was enough to eke out the victory. Six-foot-3 senior Ranley Krueger led Tatum with 10 points, while sophomore Michael Cardonita paced the Buffs (1-1) with 11.

In consolation semis, Clovis Christian posted a 68-36 win over Grady while Floyd dropped a 43-29 decision to Quemado.

Juniors Noah Gershon and Carter Teune combined for six 3-pointers — four by Teune — and both scored 24 points for CCS (1-2). Freshman Jax Piepkorn had a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 15 points for the Bronchos (0-3).

In the late game, Quemado (1-2) built a 17-point halftime lead against the Broncos (0-2). Senior guard Noah Boogying tallied 23 points for the Eagles, hitting seven 3-pointers.

Meantime, senior Hugo Diaz and sophomore Isaias Nieto finished with eight and six, respectively, for Floyd.

J.P. Stone Invitational — Fort Sumner was slated to meet Elida in Saturday’s finals after the Foxes upended host Dora 44-41 and the Tigers whipped Dexter 76-66 in Friday’s semifinals.

Junior Clay Norman scored 20 points and junior Saul Marquez 11 for Fort Sumner (2-0), which overhauled the Coyotes with a 16-8 advantage in the final period. Junior Steven Masini led Dora (2-1) with 13 points.

Elida (3-0) rolled to a 25-11 first-quarter lead and was content to play Dexter relatively even from there. Senior Rylan Creighton poured in 35 points for the Tigers, while juniors Jose Jimenez and Aiden Yates chipped in 13 and 12, respectively.

For the Demons (0-2), three players were in double digits — junior Joshua Duran with 21 points, sophomore Julio Sanchez with 17 and senior Jorge Najera with 11.

Denver City Shootout — In a consolation-round matchup, Midland Legacy (formerly Midland Lee) handed Muleshoe a 74-20 setback.

Senior Brennen Davis scored eight points for the Mules (1-2), while senior Ky Fuller had 11 points for the Rebels (4-3).
