Mayfield finishes seventh in world tie-down standings

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Clovis native Shad Mayfield ended his run at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seventh in the world tie-down roping standings, with $195,909.77 earned on the year.

Mayfield, the 2020 world champion in tie-down, won the second and fourth rounds of the 10-round competition and reached as high as second in the world rankings over the course of the finals. But he wasn’t able to make up more ground, as he finished out of the money (top six) in the remaining eight rounds.

Caleb Smidt claimed the world title, finishing fourth in Saturday’s 10th round at 7.8 seconds for a $11,321 haul. He clinched the world crown with an additional $69,234 for taking the average with 83.1 seconds on 10 head.

Smidt finished in the money on eight of the 10 rounds, with four of those rounds in the top three.

In other notable NFR finishes:

• Logan Medlin, a Tatum native, finished seventh in the team roping standings for heelers with 2021 earnings of $175,566.

• Stetson Wright repeated as all-around world champion, winning the title with.a record $585,850 in earnings, and for the second-straight year was a two-time world champion. Wright’s earrings included $343,524 as the saddle bronc riding champ; last year Wright was the bull riding world champion. The Saturday night included a Round 10 win, which gave him $26,997 along with $6,532 for finishing eighth in the average. Those two wins pushed him above his brother Ryder Wright, who finished second with $342,337. The previous earnings record holder was Trevor Brazile, who won $518,011 in the 2015 season.

• Kaycee Feild took his sixth bareback championship, claiming $357,420 in yearlong earnings. Entering the NFR, his five career titles were tied for tops with ProRodeo Hall of Famers Joe Alexander and Bruce Ford.

• Sage Kimzey earned $411,465 to claim his seventh bull riding world title in eight seasons.
