Grady, Elida notch 36-point triumphs

FORT SUMNER — Grady and Elida’s boys each cruised to 36-point victories on Friday’s first day of the Fort Sumner Shootout.

The Bronchos (3-5) posted a 68-32 win over the Santa Rosa junior varsity, while the Tigers (9-1) took care of Maxwell 64-28.

Both teams were slated to play again on Saturday, with Elida taking on Roy/Mosquero and Grady to face Cimarron. Also on Saturday, Grady’s girls were slated to match up with the Santa Rosa JV.

Senior Jordan Venable (30 points, matching a personal best set last season) and sophomore Zane Rush (a personal-best 27 points) did most of the damage for Grady (3-5), which opened a 15-point halftime lead by outscoring the Lions 21-9 in the second stanza.

Sophomores Jared Romero and Nicolas Chavez scored 11 and 10, respectively, for the Santa Rosa JV.

Elida (9-1) also had a dominating second stanza, outscoring Maxwell 21-4 to lead by 26 points at the break.

Senior Rylan Creighton poured in 31 points for the Tigers, while junior Jose Jimenez added 13. The Bears (2-4) were led by 19 points from junior Tristan Pierce.

In other boys games on Friday:

Melrose 73, Floyd 7 — The Buffaloes led 27-3 at the quarter and dominated the Broncos in Melrose.

All 12 players scored for the Buffs (4-2), led by seniors Brandon Garcia and Logan DeVaney with 16 each and sophomore Michael Cardonita with 12. Floyd (1-6) got four points from Cristian Mascorro.

Eunice 54, Dora 30 — Playing without leading scorer Steven Masini, who was away on a family trip, and starter Bryson Paxton (broken wrist), the Coyotes struggled at Eunice.

Sophomore Ashton Thompson scored 11 points and senior Ovi Ontiveros added 10 for Eunice (4-5), while senior Cache Skelley paced Dora (5-4) with 14 points.

In another boys tilt on Friday, Muleshoe (4-6) fell behind 28-12 at halftime an dropped a 52-38 decision in Amarillo against River Road.

In girls action on Friday:

Eunice 61, Dora 51 — Freshman Alena Rodriguez tallied 20 points and sophomore Chloe Jones 14 for the Lady Cardinals (4-5), who led 12-7 at the quarter and kept Dora at arm’s length most of the night.

High scores for the Lady Coyotes (6-3) were senior Katelyn Burnett with 16 points and sophomore Faith Jasso with 13.

Games canceled — Bovina’s scheduled doubleheader on Friday night at Sudan was canceled due to illness on the Bovina squads.

Fillies coach Randy Yelverton added that a Monday afternoon girls game at Post has also been canceled.
