Buffs, Lady Buffs top Tatum

TATUM - It won't make up for losing in the 8-man state championship football game, but Melrose's boys at least earned a bit of revenge on Thursday.

The Buffaloes used a 23-5 surge in the third quarter and eventually went on to rout Tatum 60-25. The schools met for the 8-man state title at Tatum in November, with the Coyotes pulling out a 22-14 victory in overtime.

Senior Logan DeVaney was the only player in double figures for the Buffs (6-3) with 11 points, but five others finished with at least six points and 10 scored overall. Tatum (5-5) was led by senior Hayden Mullins and junior Mason Brown with six points apiece.

In other boys action on Thursday:

Floyd 62, San Jon 20 - The Broncos cruised to their second win of the season, rolling to a 32-8 halftime lead against the Coyotes.

Senior Ricky Ramirez led a balanced attack for Floyd (2-7) with 12 points, followed by juniors Cristian Mascorro and Brian Gallegos with 11 and 10, respectively. For San Jon (0-4), sophomore Marvin Reese netted 12 points.

Farwell 79, Post 28 - In a game played at Lubbock Christian's Rip Griffin Center, the Steers (15-3) hammered the Antelopes for the second time in four days as senior Leo Nunez led four players in double figures with 18 points.

Also, seniors Dustan Sides and Juan Gaxiola had 15 apiece and senior Grayson Waldrop scored 14. Meantime, 6-foot-7 senior Zach Courtney delivered 10 points for Post.

In a Friday afternoon boys matchup:

Brownfield 51, Muleshoe 44 - Leading 9-8 at the quarter, the Cubs slowly pulled away in the District 2-3A opener for both teams at Brownfield.

Senior Brennan Davis led the Mules (4-7) with 11 points, while junior Irvin Torres added 10.

In girls tilts on Thursday:

Melrose 60, Tatum 45 - After the Lady Coyotes cut a 10-point halftime deficit to three heading into the final stanza, Melrose went on a 22-10 run to break it open.

Sophomore Graci Odom topped the Lady Buffs (6-3) with a personal-best 22 points while junior Isabelle Sena chipped in 15. For Tatum (6-4), junior Kylie West led the way with 14 points while sophomore Valeria Marizcal had 12.

Farwell 56, Post 30 - At LCU, the Lady Blue pulled away by outscoring Post 32-14 in the second half.

Nine players scored for Farwell (19-3), led 12 points from freshman Bella Jaime and 10 each from junior Charlie May Trimble and sophomore Chloee Witten. The Lady Antelopes (7-6) got 12 points from sophomore Zaran Kirkpatrick and 11 from junior Jaylen Pittman.
