PORTALES — A pedestrian was killed Friday afternoon in Portales, according to the New Mexico State Police.
The pedestrian, who was struck while crossing U.S. 70, was not identified Saturday by the NMSP because the family had not been properly notified.
According to NMSP Public Information Officer Ray Wilson:
• At 4:43 p.m. the Portales Police Department requested NMSP aid in investigating a fatal crash on U.S. 70 near milepost 422 and West University Drive.
• Investigators determined a 28-year-old male was crossing U.S. 70, and not crossing in a designated crosswalk at the time of the accident. He was fatally struck by a southbound 2000 Ford pickup driven by a 72-year-old male.
• The NMSP did not suspect alcohol use by the driver, and did not know the status for the pedestrian as of Saturday morning.
