Pages past, Jan. 9: Pioneer was 20 years older than state

On this date ...

1972: Several hundred eastern New Mexico residents had gathered at Yucca Junior High School in Clovis to celebrate New Mexico's 60th anniversary of statehood.

Master of ceremonies Dr. I.D. Johnson and historian Don McAlavy of Clovis recognized Anna Daniel as the oldest Curry County native.

Daniel, born in what is now northern Curry County, was 80 years old. She had been born June 24, 1891, 18 years before Curry County was established as part of New Mexico Territory.

Anna was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Juan Manuel DeOliveira, who ranched on the Frio Draw north of Clovis. She died in 1985 at age 93. Her obituary reported she was “one of the only pioneers who (could) remember the open range prior to 1900.”

She is buried in Clovis' Mission Garden of Memories.
