Coyotes use late rally to subdue Elida

GRADY - Consolation and championship semifinal matches were on tap Friday at Texico after quarterfinal contests were contested on Wednesday and Thursday at Grady.

In Thursday's boys quarterfinals:

Dora 55, Elida 53 - The fifth-seeded Coyotes (6-4) erased a seven-point deficit with a 25-point fourth quarter against the Tigers (11-2) and advanced to face top-seeded Fort Sumner in the semis. A potential game-tying shot by Elida at the buzzer was off the mark.

Junior Steven Masini led the way for Dora with 24 points, while sophomore Cole Kircher had 14 and senior Cache Skelley 13. For Elida, junior Jose Jimenez posted 22 points while juniors Mason Pritchett and Aiden Yates added nine apiece.

Texico 67, Logan 43 - Sophomore Cade Figg's 20 points helped the Wolverines (6-3) get past Logan. Texico broke it open by outscoring the Longhorns 25-7 in the third stanza for a 25-point cushion.

Junior Jahvon Askew had 12 points and sophomore Max Villareal scored 10 for the third-seeded Wolverines, who were to face No. 2 seed Melrose on Friday. Meantime, Logan (3-7) was paced by 16 points from sophomore Kaeden Stoner.

In Thursday's girls quarterfinals:

Texico 53, Tatum 37 - The fourth-seeded Lady Wolverines led 10-8 at the quarter and steadily pulled away against Tatum, which was missing a number of players due to COVID-19 protocols.

Sophomore Kaya New led the way for Texico (4-5) with 17 points, and junior Catelyn Breshears added 16. The Lady Coyotes (6-5) put a pair of players in double digits - eighth-grader Avery Hennard with 13 points and freshman LouAnn Villasenor with 12.

Melrose 50, Dora 30 - Melrose took control in the middle two stanzas, outscoring the Lady Coyotes 32-8. The third-seeded Lady Buffs (6-3) were to square off against Logan on Friday.

Junior Isabelle Sena had 18 points and sophomore Graci Odom 16 for Melrose. Senior Katelyn Burnett topped Dora (7-4) with 10 points.

In Wednesday's boys quarterfinals:

Fort Sumner 69, Floyd 28 - The Foxes (5-2) rolled to a 20-3 first-quarter lead and cruised behind four double-figure scorers.

Junior Clay Norman led the way with five of the team's eight 3-pointers and 22 points, while junior Saul Marquez added two treys and 14 points and sophomores Joaquin Segura and Seth Saiz finished with 13 and 10, respectively.

For the Broncos (2-8), senior Hugo Diaz scored eight points and senior Cristian Mascorro netted seven.

Melrose 79, Grady 26 - Freshman Jax Piepkorn's 3-pointer gave the host Bronchos a quick lead, but Melrose (6-2) followed with the next 11 points and never looked back.

Sophomore Michael Cordova scored 13 points and senior Brody McAlister and freshman Cy Draper chipped in 12 apiece as all 12 Buffaloes scored. For Grady (4-7), Piepkorn and senior Jordan Verbel had eight points each and sophomore Zane Ross chipped in seven.

In Wednesday's girls quarterfinals:

Logan 73, Grady 30 - Already up by 21, the Lady Longhorns (8-3) ran away with the contest by outscoring Grady 24-6 in the third stanza.

Senior Reece Goldston led four Logan players in double digits with 15 points, followed by senior Kyra Conway and eighth-grader Desta Rose with 14 apiece and sophomore Hailee Robertson with 10. Sophomore Shayla White topped the Lady Bronchos (4-5) with 13 points, and sophomore Adelina Ramirez knocked in 10.

Fort Sumner 58, Floyd 9 - The Vixens led 23-5 at the quarter and held the Lady Broncos scoreless over the next two stanzas.

Nine players tallied for Fort Sumner (8-1), led by junior Olivia Lucero's 19 points. Meantime, senior Jona Baros scored all nine points for Floyd (0-9).
