Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
A virtual event in Clovis and a commemorative march in Portales will honor the memory of Martin Luther King on Monday, Dr. Martin Luther King Day.
Government offices and schools will be closed for the holiday.
A virtual event sponsored by the Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Commission will be conducted on Zoom from 10 a.m. to noon Monday. The event’s keynote will be a talk by Marsha Hardeman, a member of the University of New Mexico’s Africana Studies faculty, entitled “Shifting Priorities to Build the Beloved Community.”
Winning works in the King Commission’s art contest held Dec. 14 will be on display in the Clovis Carver Library.

In Portales, the city’s Cultural Affairs Committee and Eastern New Mexico University are sponsoring a commemorative march for King beginning at 5 p.m. Monday.
The march will begin at the Memorial Building in downtown Portales. Participants will walk to the MLK Tree on the ENMU campus, where refreshments will be served.
The march will be followed at ENMU by three days of events. The events include a special lunch noon Tuesday in the Crossroads Café in the Campus Union Building, a Non-violent Direct Action Advocacy presentation at 4 p.m. in Room 112 in the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building, and showing of a film called “Within Our Gates” at 7 p.m. in the University Theater.
On Jan. 19, ENMU will host a panel on Minority Entrepreneurship in Portales, featuring Glen Johnson, owner of Coach J's, and Darrelyn McCloud, owner of SNAP Fitness. The panel will be held at 4 p.m. in the College of Business.
On Jan. 20, there will be a poetry recitation at 4 p.m. in the Sandia Room of the ENMU Campus Union Building.
