State records second record weekend of virus cases

SANTA FE — The bad news: The New Mexico Department of Health announced its second-straight record weekend of new COVID-19 cases, with 9,284 cases confirmed between Friday and Monday.

The slightly worse news: Last Monday’s then-record of 7,313 cases was a consolidation of four days of reporting, while the most recent record was established with just three days.

The totals include 161 new cases in Curry County and 26 in Roosevelt County. No local ZIP codes were in the top 10 in infections, with those totals ranging from 209 to 471.

Bernalillo County comprised the largest amount of cases with 3,228. Dona Ana County also reached four figures with 1,038 new cases. All 33 counties recorded at least one positive case, and 17 counties reported between 100 and 700 cases.

The report also confirmed 37 new deaths, with two of them from Curry County. A male in his 60s was identified as a recent death, and a male in his 50s was a death from more than 30 days ago. Both were hospitalized.
