Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Tourism has recommended six projects in Curry and Roosevelt counties to be funded through capital outlay requests from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to the New Mexico Legislature.
The legislature’s 30-day session will begin Tuesday.
The requests from the city of Clovis, and Curry and Roosevelt county governments were compiled by the Eastern Plains Council of Governments, according to tourism department documents.
The tourism department worked with all seven of the state’s councils of government to compile its list of capital outlay recommendations, according to department documents.
The two projects from the city of Clovis on the list include:
• MainStreet-streetscape construction of landscaping, lighting and sidewalk improvements, upgrades, and restoration in Clovis' Downtown District that would include bicycle, pedestrian and equestrian paths. The tourism department recommends capital outlay funding of $400,000 toward a total needed of $1,3 million.
• Renovating the Lyceum Theatre on Main Street. The suggested capital outlay is $326,000 toward a total project cost of nearly $1.5 million.
Curry County projects include:
• Renovation and equipping a building at the Curry County Fairgrounds to house a museum to display memorabilia and artifacts of Curry County. The tourism department recommends a capital outlay of $200,000, which would fund the whole project.
• Expansion of the Curry County Fairgrounds to accommodate equine, rodeo, agricultural, and cultural arts events. The expansion would include covered horse stalls, an RV park to accommodate traveling visitors, and a warm-up arena for equestrian events. Tourism recommends a capital outlay of $600,000 toward a total cost estimate of $9,000,000.
Roosevelt County projects include:
• Windmill Museum improvements, including towers for windmills, educational signage around the windmills, windmill repairs and landscaping. Tourism recommends $150,000 to cover the whole cost of the project.
• A master improvement plan for the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds, which would include pavilion roof replacement, rebuilding of hog barns and poultry cages, additional parking, renovations to the livestock barn, construction of a multipurpose facility on the fairgrounds, recreational vehicle hookups, and covered horse stalls. Tourism recommends just over $1 million in capital outlay to contribute toward a total cost of $2.7 million.
