BOVINA — Senior Katelyn Ruiz scored 21 points and Vega erased a five-point deficit after the first quarter to beat Bovina 68-46 on Friday night in a District 3-2A girls matchup.
Senior Dakota Walker added 12 points for the Lady Longhorns (8-5, 2-1 district), who trailed 17-12 before going on a 44-20 run over the next two stanzas. Three players reached double digits for the Fillies (8-10, 0-2) — Pilly Saenz with 14, Alyssa Marquez with 13 and Destiny Lara with 10.
In boys games on Friday night:
Vega 58, Bovina 46 — Leading by two points at halftime, the Longhorns pulled away in the final two stanzas for a District 3-2A win.
Vega (6-7, 2-1) got 20 points from senior Ryan Grawunder, 11 from senior Garret Stribling and 10 from junior Creed Gilter. Leading the Mustangs (3-11, 0-1) was senior Israel Granados with 15 points, followed by 12 from senior Angel Lara and nine from junior Darian Delarosa.
Denver City 44, Muleshoe 27 — The Mustangs bolted to a 16-4 lead after one quarter on Friday night and went to beat the Mules in a District 3-3A boys matchup.
Senior Ricky Montes scored 14 points and junior Erik Escobar added 11 for the Mustangs (8-11, 2-2 district). The Mules (5-9, 1-3) were led by seven points from senior Victor Morales.
Three doubleheaders were postponed on Friday — Boys Ranch at Farwell, rescheduled for Thursday; Dora at Tatum, rescheduled for Feb. 3, and Lovington at Texico, rescheduled for Feb. 8.
In boys games on Thursday:
Melrose 74, Cloudcroft 37 — Trailing 17-15 at the quarter, Melrose dominated the rest of the way in cruising past the Bears.
Senior Logan DeVaney scored 26 points for the Buffaloes (8-3), while freshman Cy Draper had 13 and senior Brody McAlister 10. For Cloudcroft (5-5), junior Isaiah Ortega finished with 13 points and senior Brady Lynch netted 10.
Elida 55, Floyd 42 — At Floyd, the Tigers opened a 29-12 halftime lead and cruised to a District 6-1A win over the Broncos.
Senior Rylan Creighton scored 21 points for Elida (13-2), while junior Jose Jimenez added 10. For Floyd (2-12), senior Hugo Diaz put in 15 points.
Roy/Mosquero 70, Grady 40 — At Grady, Roy/Mosquero led by six at halftime, but pulled away with an 18-9 surge in the third frame and won behind a 31-point performance from senior Lane Clavel.
Freshman Jackson Fudge added 15 points and senior Matthew Libby 11 for Roy/Mosquero (11-4). Senior Jordan Verble was high man for Grady with 22 points.
In area girls action on Thursday:
Roy/Mosquero 70, Grady 40 — The defending 1A state champion Lady Blue led by just two points at the quarter, but outscored the Lady Bronchos 21-9 in the second stanza to take control.
Three players reached double figures for Roy/Mosquero (10-4) — juniors Selma Baca with 24 points and Tanna Crisp with 15, and freshman Natalie Smith with 13. High scorer for Grady (6-8) was sophomore Shayla White, who had three 3-pointers and 20 points.
One boys game, Clovis Christian at Fort Sumner in District 6-1A, was postponed on Thursday and is slated to be made up on Feb. 18.
