Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Wintry temperatures in forecast

The region's mild winter may be coming to an abrupt halt.

A mostly sunny afternoon today is expected to turn into frosty, possibly snowy, weather tonight. And the trend will likely continue through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

“If we get any (moisture), it will be overnight Wednesday,” said Dan Heerding, Clovis' emergency management coordinator.

“Could make for a messy Thursday morning commute.”

But Heerding added, “The ground is really warm so it might not amount to anything. I hope I am wrong as we really need the moisture.”

Whatever happens with the snow/rain potential, forecasters say the Clovis-Portales area can expect overnight low temperatures in the teens and low 20s for the next several days.

Thursday's high is expected to be below freezing, while tonight and Thursday night will see lows near 15, NWS reports.

A 20% chance of snow is forecast for tonight and Thursday morning. Little accumulation is expected.
