Coyotes deal CCS second loss in three days

DORA — Two days after their 12-game winning streak came to an end, Clovis Christian’s boys found themselves on the short end again.

Dora outscored the Eagles 34-14 in the second half on Monday night en route to a 60-38 victory. CSC (12-4) saw its streak end on Saturday against Class 1A No. 1 Magdalena.

Junior Steven Mason scored 21 points for the Coyotes (8-7), while sophomore Paul Krishna added 14. Juniors Carter Teen and Noah Grecian paced the Eagles with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Also on Monday night:

Fort Sumner 45, Melrose boys 38 — In District 6-1A, the teams played evenly in each quarter except the third, when the Foxes (9-2, 2-0 district) went on a 16-9 run.

Junior Tyler Said led Fort Sumner with 18 points, while senior Logan deviancy and sophomore Michael Martina each tallied 11 for the Buffaloes (9-4, 1-1).

In the girls matchup, the visiting Vixens (12-2, 2-0) notched a 42-37 victory over the Lady Buffs (7-6, 0-2).

In area boys games on Saturday:

Magdalena 82, Clovis Christian 37 — The Eagles added this game — played on a neutral court at Corona — only last week, and they perhaps couldn’t have picked a worse time to face the defending Class 1A state champion Steers. Magellan (17-1) was coming off its first loss of the season last week at Class 2A No. 2 Delarosa 67-56.

Senior Jordan Miracle matched CSC by himself with 37 points, including nine of the team’s 14 3-point baskets. Four came in the first quarter, which ended with the Steers in front 22-7.

Junior D’Shaun Vinyard added 25 points for Magdalena, while junior Noah Gershon topped CCS with 19 points.

Texico 66, Logan 39 — The Wolverines opened a 20-point halftime lead after outscoring the Longhorns 25-8 in the second stanza at Texico.

Junior Jahvon Askew paced Texico (7-5) with 22 points, while junior Max Villareal added 13 and senior Brayden Bender 10. For Logan, sophomore Brock Burns scored 13 points.

Eunice 56, Dora 47 — At Dora, the Coyotes led much of the way, but the Cardinals outscored them 24-11 in the final stanza to pull out the win.

Junior Billy Blevins scored 22 points for Eunice (7-7), including 16 during the fourth-quarter rally. Senior Ovi Ontiveros added 11.

For Dora, Masini tallied 19 points and sophomore Cache Skelley chipped in 11.

Fort Sumner 78, Grady 46 — At Fort Sumner, the Foxes opened a 22-6 lead at the quarter en route to a District 6-1A victory.

Junior Clay Norman scored 26 points and sophomore Joaquin Segura added 23. Also in double digits for the Foxes (8-2, 1-0) were juniors Tyler Saiz and Saul Marquez with 11 and 10, respectively.

The Bronchos (4-11, 0-1) were paced by 11 points from freshman Jax Piepkorn.

In area girls games on Saturday:

Logan 48, Texico 31 — The Lady Wolverines, playing shorthanded with four regulars out, hung in there much of the way. They battled the Lady Longhorns to a 22-22 halftime tie, but Logan (14-3) limited them to nine points over the final two cantos.

Senior Reece Goldston scored 19 points and senior Rilee Nials added 11 for Logan. The Lady Wolverines got a game-high 17 points from junior Catelyn Breshears.

Fort Sumner 64, Grady 38 — The host Vixens opened an 18-9 lead at the quarter and stayed in control the rest of the way against the Lady Bronchos in the District 6-1A opener for both teams.

Junior Avery Cavett led a balanced attack for Fort Sumner (11-2 overall) with 15 points, while freshman Allyssa Casaus knocked in 11 and senior Megan Oberg 10. A total of 10 players scored for the Vixens.

Top scorers for Grady (6-8) were sophomores Shayla White with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and Taylor Foote with 12.
