Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University athletic director Paul Weir has announced a multi-year contract extension for football coach Tye Hiatt.
The school did not release how long the extension was for, although Hiatt said it was “for more than two years.”
Hiatt was named the Hounds’ head coach in April 2021, replacing Kelley Lee. He was coming off a successful stint as ENMU went 4-7, including 1-6 in the Lone Star Conference. Perhaps the team’s top performance of the season came in a 31-24 overtime loss at then-No. 15 Midwestern State on Sept. 25.
“Coach Hiatt has done nothing but impress us with his class, dedication and expertise,” Weir said in a release from the school. “This contract is a symbol of our belief in him. We look forward to watching him build our football program while, in turn, providing him with the resources and tools to make that happen.”
He previously served as the offensive coordinator at Division II Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W. Va.
“I want to thank (ENMU) president (Patrice) Caldwell and Dr. Weir for their confidence in me and our coaching staff,” Hiatt said. “My family and I are so thankful for Eastern New Mexico University and the surrounding community.”
The Hounds are getting ready for spring football, which begins on March 30. Meantime, Hiatt is also preparing to announce his signing class for next season on the NCAA’s national signing day, set for next Wednesday.
“Our coaching staff will continue to work day and night to build upon the great tradition of Greyhound football,” Hiatt said. “With signing day approaching and winter workouts underway, our team is anxious to get back on the field.”
