Hurren sparks Hounds' showing at Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE — Competing in the 600 for the first time, sophomore Dan Hurren highlighted Eastern New Mexico University performances in Saturday’s Dr. MLK Invitational indoor track meet, hosted by the University of New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Hurren ran a time of 1 minute, 21.85 seconds to finish fourth in the event. His time was also the second-best in school history, according to available records.

The men’s 1,600 relay team of junior Iziah Hall, Hurren, junior Devis Cheruiyot and sophomore Japhet Toroitich placed second overall in 3:22.25, the fifth-best time in program history. Sophomore Mohamed Magano set personal bests with times of 7.29 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 23.23 in the 200.

For the women, Clovis freshman Kiara Cox ran 26.82 in the 200, good for sixth place overall. Senior Malethabo Seema ran the program’s fourth-fastest all-time clocking in the 600 at 1:43.38.

Juniors Tamia Smith and Tatiana Hall both set personal bests in the weight throw, Smith going 46-5 1/4 and Hall 37-9 1/4, and in shot put, with Smith (39-2 1/2) moving into a top-five spot all-time at ENMU while Hall went 32-2.

Junior Arianna Hayde finished 17th in long jump, but posted the school’s second-best all-time mark at 17-10 1/2.

ENMU is back in Albuquerque this weekend to compete in UNM’s Team Open on Saturday.
