Early voting starts Tuesday for March 1 election

Tuesday is the last day for voter registration for Curry and Roosevelt county voters who intend to vote on March 1 or submit absentee votes for the March 1 municipal elections. Same-day registration is available to early voters through Feb. 26. Early voting begins Tuesday.

Here’s a quick election roundup:

• Register at county clerk’s offices, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Curry County: 417 Gidding St., Suite #130, Clovis.  Phone, 575-763-5591. Roosevelt County: 109 W. First St, Portales.  Phone, 575-356-8562.

• Same day registration will be available to early voters from Tuesday through Feb. 26, at city clerk’s offices 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Clovis: 321 N. Connelly St. Phone, (575) 769-7827 Portales: 100 W. First St., Phone, (575) 356-6662.

• Absentee ballots will be mailed out to voters who request them beginning Tuesday.  The last day to request an absentee ballot is Feb. 24, according to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website.

• On Election Day, March 1, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all locations.  Registered voters can locate polling places at the Secretary of State’s website:, https://voterportal.servis.sos.state.nm.us/WhereToVote.aspx, or by calling county clerks’ offices.

• Raising the recall petition signature requirement from 20% of prior municipal election turnout to 33 1/3%.

• Requiring a recall petition include a reason.

• Eliminating a section on term limits rendered unenforceable by the state constitution.

• Editing the charter to be gender-neutral (for example: amending sections where commissioners are referred to as “himself”).
